On Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 7:00pm at the Warner Park Community Center, 1625 Northport Dr, there will be a community meeting to discuss the future of the sculptural replica of The Statue of Liberty located in Warner Park. The Statue of Liberty was commissioned by the Boy Scouts of America in the 1950's as part of a nationwide effort to celebrate America's Freedoms. This sculpture has become significantly damaged over the last 60 years and measures must be taken if the community wishes to prevent the work from deteriorating beyond repair. The Madison Arts Commission (MAC), an 11-member body appointed by the Mayor to advise the City on public policy matters relating to arts and culture, is concerned about this sculpture's poor condition. MAC would like to gather information from the community about their feelings regarding the future of this piece of art. Karin Wolf, the city's Arts Program Administrator, recently met with three conservation firms to discuss the future of the Statue of Liberty. These preservation options will be shared and discussed at the community meeting on September 23rd. You are invited to come to this meeting to share your ideas about this work. No decisions about what will happen with the work will be made until after the community has been heard on this issue. If you are an admirer of this sculpture and have information that you would like to share at this meeting or for more information please contact the Arts Program Adminstrator.
