Firefighters Extinguish Office Fire - Updated Sept. 4 12:10 AM

posted

City of Madison firefighters extinguished a fire in the Engineering Research building at 1500 Engineering Drive tonight. The fire caused approximately $20,000 damage to a small office and its contents. The door to the office was closed and contained the smoke and heat within the office. This prevented damage to other parts of the building. The fire was discovered when Engine 4 responded at 8:14 PM to investigate a fire alarm sounding in the building. Engine 4 arrived four minutes later and firefighters were checking the building for the cause of the alarm when they discovered the fire in the office. A full fire response was dispatched to assist Engine 4. Firefighters doused the flames with a small amount of water and removed smoke from the building with fans. No injuries were reported at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A Madison Fire Department investigator is assisting the UW Police Department with the fire origin and cause investigation. Please contact the UW Police Department for information related to the fire's cause. Firefighters remind everyone of these safety tips: • Familiarize yourself with the emergency plan for any buildings that you frequent. • Always know where the nearest exit is located. • When the fire alarm sounds, get out of the building and stay outside until it is safe to return. • Never go back inside the building for any reason.
