On Saturday, November 14, the South Madison Branch Library (2222 S. Park St., 266-6395) will be hosting a multitude of events celebrating the library and its rich community of supporters. The Madison Public Library Foundation and the Friends of the South Madison Branch Library will be hosting a book presentation about the life and work of John Ohliger from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in celebration of the 2009 publication of "Challenging the Professionalization of Adult Education: John Ohliger and Contradictions in Modern Practice." Attendees will enjoy a light brunch and listen to South Madison Librarian Chris Wagner (John Ohliger's wife) read from and talk about the book. Ohliger was a Madison educator, peace activist, public intellectual, and co-founder of WORT radio. He was a lover of libraries, especially the South Madison Library. Copies of the book will be available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the new South Madison Branch Library. Reservations are required, and must be made by Thursday, November 12. Attendees may call (608) 250-5758 to RSVP, or email cwagnerz @ yahoo.com After the presentation, Terrie Goren, Foundation Executive Director, will speak on plans for the new South Madison Library. The presentation will focus on the SCRIP program to support the library, and ways of participating in fundraising efforts. The SCRIP program, from Simplified Fundraising, offers donors the opportunity to purchase local gift cards, discounted gift certificates, and order magazines, all while donating to the South Madison Branch Library. Finally, families are invited to take a short walk to the UW Space Place (2300 S. Park St.) for bilingual fun, games, and stories. Singer and storyteller Clare Norelle presents "The Mystery of the Rabbit and the Hot Chocolate - and Other Adventures" - or, "El Misterio del Conejo y el Chocolate - y Otras Adventuras" - stories and songs in Spanish and English at 1:30 p.m. Participants young and old will learn songs and singing games in both languages. There will be face painting with Nuria and light refreshments. The program is free for all ages. Attendees needing accommodations may call 266-6395 or TDD# 266-6314.
