Lake Rescue Team Assists Rescue Effort

The Madison Fire Department Lake Rescue Team was called to Lake Monona this afternoon to rescue a person who had fallen through the ice. The call for assistance, received at 3:51 PM, reported a person in the water near the Olbrich Park boat landing. Further reports indicated that the person was near the Tonyawatha Boat Launch in the City of Monona. Madison's Lake Rescue Team met Monona Fire Department and Dane County Sheriff's Office personnel at the boat launch where the rescue effort was coordinated. Team members used cold water rescue suits and ice sleds to cross the thin, dangerous ice. Once they located the man in the water, rescuers brought him to shore where paramedics were waiting to transport him to UW Hospital. The Madison Fire Department Lake Rescue Team is comprised 51 trained scuba divers, certified by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. On-duty divers respond year-round to topside, underwater, and ice rescues and recoveries, vehicle recoveries, and assistance calls from the City of Madison Police Department and Dane County Sheriff's Office.
