Snowfall May Bury Heat Vents and Hydrants

With the arrival of the large snowfall, the Madison Fire Department would like to remind everyone to keep furnace vents and hydrants on and around your home, free of snow and ice. Snow and ice may block your home heat intake and exhaust vents. If a vent is obstructed, the appliance may malfunction or create a dangerous build-up of carbon monoxide. Shovel a three foot area around the vents and check them regularly to be sure they stay clear. In addition, Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed on every floor of your home. Hydrants Firefighters also ask to keep a three foot radius shoveled around all fire hydrants. If firefighters are delayed one minute, the fire can double its intensity. That minute can make the difference on an occupant's life. Ice Rinks and Lakes As the weather gets colder, people will be tempted to ice skate at city parks, or on the Madison Lakes. Please keep OFF of the surfaces until they are declared safe.
