Heavy Snow, Ice and Wind can Damage Trees

Madison Parks Forestry crews have been busy today responding to calls of fallen trees and limbs. Windstorms and ice/snow-storms strong enough to tear limbs off trees can be a problem with the snow storm the City is experiencing. With high enough wind speeds or heavy snow loads, no tree species are risk free. The tremendous leverage that wind and snow exerts on tree limbs causes various types of damage which typically include broken tops out of conifers such as spruces and pines to torn and twisted limbs on deciduous trees. Residents should report street or park tree damage to the City of Madison Forestry Section from the hours of 7 am to 3 pm. After hours, city tree emergencies can be reported to 255-2345. Priorities will be keeping major thoroughfares open which includes responding to tree emergencies that impede the City's snow storm response. If a resident has a private tree emergency they can contact a local tree care company.
