MFD Crews Douse Apartment Fire; No Injuries

City of Madison firefighters responded to a mattress fire in a downtown apartment this afternoon at 222 North Hamilton. The call came in at 12:35 p.m. The fire was in a first floor apartment in the 15-unit building known as The Hamilton. The occupants were not home at the time of the fire. Crews took just 5 minutes to extinguish the fire. Other firefighters on scene evacuated the building. There were no injuries. Damages are estimated at $12,000 to the structure and its contents. The fire was confined to the single apartment where it began. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Investigators believe the fire was unintentional.
