Madison Municipal Building Gallery, 215 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Hours: 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM Weekdays, Saturdays 9:00 AM - Noon The Center for Photography at Madison's Alternography Group will present Plastique Mystique and Heavy Metal at the Madison ARTSpace. The exhibit features the works of photographers using plastic cameras (Holgas, Dianas and the like) and older, heavier metal cameras ("bricks" as they were called). These cameras are for the photographer who believes depth of feeling is more important than depth of field. Serious photographers use quirky little cameras because they revel in the serendipity of simple tools and the unique images they can achieve. The photographer has very little control and as a result they tend to loosen up, and are more willing to take chances making images they might not be able to accomplish with all that technical, high-cost equipment. The serious photographer is freed to be more creative and break the rules. Currently there are 10 photographers in the Alternography Group, making images that explore their personal photographic interests and themes, while embracing the unique opportunities for image making provided by their plastic toy or vintage film camera of choice. The Center for Photography at Madison (CPM) provides a home for photographic activity, and promotes photography for creative expression, cultural investigation and personal enjoyment. Through a broad range of programming, classes and exhibitions, CPM offers a forum for all of Wisconsin for the exchange of ideas, as well as the appreciation and study of the photographic arts. The Madison Arts Commission's ARTspace program is open to all Madison visual artists who would like to showcase original two-dimensional works in highly utilized city spaces.
