Fire Damages Home & Neighbor's House

An afternoon fire caused approximately $325,000 to an eastside home and $20,000 damage to the neighbor's home. At 2:03 p.m. firefighters were sent to a structure fire at 22 La Crescenta Circle. Responding crews reported seeing smoke from more than a mile away. When Engine 5 arrived on scene, they reported a fully involved garage fire that was extending into the single story home. The wall of the house next door at 18 La Crescenta Circle was also starting to burn. A hoseline was quickly pulled off the engine to wet down the neighbor's home. This action prevented the fire from entering the neighbor's house and limited damage to that home's exterior. An adult and two small children were home at 22 La Crescenta Circle when the fire was discovered. They were waiting outside when firefighters arrived. A search team from Ladder 8 checked the home to insure that everyone was out of the building. Firefighters also checked both homes to make sure fire did not extend into the attic. No injuries were reported at the fire scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Here's a safety tip: Smoke alarms save lives. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. Make sure your home is safe for you and your family by following these safety tips: • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, in each bedroom, and outside each bedroom. • Test your smoke alarms every month. • Make an escape plan and have a fire drill to practice your plan. • When the alarm sounds, get out and stay out. • After you have escaped, call 9-1-1 from a safe place. • Never go back inside the building for any reason.
