City Prepared Despite Federal Injunction

In conjunction with today’s planned expansion of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) under President Obama’s recent executive action on immigration, Mayor Soglin urged communities to apply if they are eligible. As part of Cities United for Immigration Action (CUIA), Mayor Soglin also renewed Madison’s commitment to protecting immigrants from fraudsters as they seek assistance in navigating the new process.

"I am confident that the recent injunction issued by a federal judge in Texas will be overturned," said Mayor Soglin. "New American families are part of the fabric of our society, and as we assist them with access to the legal services they deserve we will work to protect them from fraud and harassment. I am encouraged by the Madison Common Council’s funding support as we work with our partners on this issue."

Mayor Soglin was joined today at Centro Hispano by Centro Executive Director Dr. Karen Menendez Coller, Madison Alder Shiva Bidar-Sielaff, Police Chief Mike Koval, Ramona Natera of the Catholic Multi-Cultural Center, and Janice Beers of Jewish Social Services.

The City is working with those community partners and the RISE Law Center to coordinate immigration clinics and provide legal and application assistance. The City funding will provide a half-time staff member at Centro Hispano to coordinate the joint effort.

"As a collective we are indebted to Mayor Soglin and the Common Council for supporting efforts that will facilitate all those eligible for DAPA and expanded DACA to swiftly receive services and come out of the shadows," said Karen Menendez Coller, Executive Director of Centro Hispano.

The dedication of coordinated enforcement resources and the launch of a substantial public awareness campaign to educate immigrant families at risk of fraud will be a centerpiece of Madison’s efforts to support President Obama’s recent executive action.
