Pennsylvania Park Public Art Project Finalists Announced

On Monday, December 4, the three nationally recognized artists/teams will meet with staff, stakeholders, and the broader community as part of the public art selection process for Pennsylvania Park at 1915 E Johnson St.
After a review process by the Madison Arts Commission, informed by neighborhood input, the City is inviting three artists/teams to advance to the next stage in the selection process. 1) Aristotle Greorgiades and Gail Simpson of Actual Size Artworks, 2) Ray Chi, and 3) Suikang Zhaohave been invited to create proposals for public art in Pennsylvania Park.
The Madison Arts Commission would like to invite the public to attend Monday night's (Dec 4) artist talks, wherein each of the finalists will briefly present their approach and philosophy to public art, and members of the community can meet the candidates.
Finalists will then have a bit over a month to create concept sketches and outline their proposals for the site. Those proposals will be shared publicly on January 9, 2018 with a final decision about whom to commission for the work expected in February of 2018.
The opportunity to commission art for Pennsylvania Park evolved out of an extensive Neighborhood Planning Process in which enhancing the parks and green space emerged as a top priority. A community dialogue regarding the future of this site has been ongoing for over a year. The Emerson East Neighborhood Association (EENA), District 12 Alder, Community Development staff, Planning staff, and Parks personnel are thrilled to enhance this highly-visible mini City park, expecting that when the project is complete, the neighborhood will have an iconic piece of art that reflects their values of sustainability, unity, diversity, and inclusion.
The Community Development Division of the City of Madison (CDD) is providing $40,000 of Block Grant funding to fully fund this public art project.
