Madison Public Library Celebrates National Library Week

Events and displays to honor the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians

From April 7 to April 13, National Library Week will be celebrated at Madison Public Library and throughout the city. This year’s theme nationally is “Libraries = Strong Communities” and events over the course of the week will highlight ways to get involved -- both for library regulars or as first time patrons.

National Library Week was first celebrated in 1958 by the National Book Committee, and has since evolved into an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.

Madison Public Library’s special activities include:

Week-long Scavenger Hunt
Starting Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 14, visitors can complete nine “scavenger hunt” challenges at any of the nine Madison Public Library locations - or use this as an opportunity to visit them all.  Examples of challenges include sharing a selfie with your library card, learning new skills using library resources, checking out library collections, and sharing your support on social media.  The full list of challenges is at madisonpubliclibrary.org/scavenger-hunt
Tag Madison Public Library in social media photos and posts demonstrating completion of all 9 challenges for the chance to receive a prize Madison Public Library canvas bag at your favorite Madison library. Submissions must be in by 5pm on Sunday, April 14, 2019. Please make sure your posts are set to “public” and tag accordingly.

To celebrate, Madison Public Library Foundation is asking those who are devoted to their libraries to make a gift to Madison Public Library Foundation's annual fund. Share A Library Story on Take Action for Libraries Day – Thursday, April 11
Throughout the week, or specifically on Thursday, library users are invited to share why they love their library. It may be because of a fantastic event, a free media service, a community gathering tool, or something else entirely! Library users are invited to post a story with the hashtags #MyLibraryMyStory and #MadisonPublicLibrary to get involved with the national campaign to share stories.

In addition, at Madison Public Library, we feel like EVERY week is library week! Madison Public Library hosts nearly 100 free events on an average week, from preschool storytimes to film screenings to book discussions to community conversations.  Learn more about all upcoming events at https://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org/events/calendar
