Incident Details

A downtown man may have opted for takeout Friday night after his plans to smoke a pig went awry.

Engine Company 1 was sent to N. Pinckney Street when someone in the neighborhood reported heavy smoke wafting into their home. Firefighters found a resident with a large plywood container situated between two buildings. He said he was attempting to smoke a whole pig in the makeshift smoker.

With coals placed on a slab of concrete below, the man said he wanted to speed up the process so he added a large amount of coals to the fire. This caused pig fat to drip and the plywood contraption soon started on fire, burning the pig which had been roasting for the last seven hours.

He doused the coals with a fire extinguisher and sprayed the pig down with water, and firefighters later applied more water to ensure the fire was out.

The man was given a copy of the City of Madison’s outdoor burning policy as firefighters explained that this type of cooking is not acceptable in city limits. He was advised not to cook anymore that evening and to review the burning policy again in the morning.
