Incident Details

Workers at GEF 4 state office building were asked to evacuate as Capital Police wished to investigate a strange sulfuric odor that was accumulating in the building. Engine Company 1 was called over to assist in the investigation.

A check of the large battery back-up room at GEF 4 provided no clues as to the origin of the smell, but firefighters did note a strong odor of sewer gas on that floor. All floors inside the building were inspected, including the underground parking area, but the odor appeared to be concentrated on that single floor.

After some discussion with maintenance about whether to summon the assistance of the MFD Hazardous Incident Team, the building managers called their plumber. The plumber, who's familiar with the building, confirmed that problems like this have occurred in the past-- any they usually indicate an issue with the floor drains.

The plumber and building maintenance flushed all the drains, and the sewage smell quickly disappeared. With the problem under control, the Hazardous Incident Team was advised their services weren't needed, and occupants returned inside.
