Incident Details

One person was transported to the hospital after his apartment filled with smoke early Tuesday morning.

A neighbor reported smoke seeping from the apartment and activated the hallway pull station when nobody answered the door. He also called 911.

Engine Company 3 and Medic 3 were first on scene and noted smoke coming from the door jamb. The door was slightly warm to the touch. As other residents evacuated the building, firefighters knocked on the door again and received no response. They forced entry and found white smoke banked three-quarters down toward the floor.

A large pan of food was found on a stovetop burner set to “high," and the resident was found sleeping on the couch. It took some effort to wake up the resident. He admitted to consuming alcohol prior to the incident.

Firefighters ventilated the unit and reset the pull station. Paramedics treated and transported the patient as a precaution.
