Incident Details

The Madison Fire Department was called to the HyVee grocery store on Whitney Way when someone reported smoke near the dairy coolers.

A full structure fire response was dispatched and remained on scene until firefighters could confirm whether there was active fire anywhere in the building or on the roof.

Firefighters detected a slight odor of smoke as they were escorted to the back of the store, where the odor became much stronger. Two additional fire companies assisted Ladder Company 2 with searching the large store for the source of the burning smell. Ladder Company 6 went to the roof to check the HVAC system.

After an exhaustive search, it was determined that an exterior lighting fixture ballast had malfunctioned, causing both the smoky conditions and the odor inside the store. A small portion of an interior wall was opened so Ladder 2 could check for any fire inside. None was found.

Firefighters suggested that store management contact an electrician and/or maintenance person to disconnect the light fixture and replace the light.

All remaining crews left the scene at 6:39 p.m.
