Incident Details

The Madison Fire Department was dispatched to a number of outside fires Friday. None resulted in serious damage, but they serve as reminders that dry weather conditions pose an increased fire danger in our community.

On Friday afternoon, Engine Company 13 was dispatched to Mesta Lane, near Commercial Avenue, where they found an active brush fire blowing away from the roadway. The fire spread approximately 20 yards by 15 yards, and doubled in size in just a few minutes, according to the 911 caller who reported it. Engine 13 contained and extinguished the fire.

A half-hour later, Engine Company 10 responded to the intersection of Northport Drive and Knutson Drive, where an fire was discovered near some railroad tracks. Firefighters put out the fire, noting nothing suspicious.

Just after 5:00 p.m., Engine Company 5 was sent to a small brush fire on the 4800 block of Ferris Avenue. A neighbor reported seeing smoke, but nobody was around the fire. The cause is unknown.

Until outdoor conditions improve, take the proper precautions when grilling or burning wood, and always smoking materials in a proper container.
