Last Updated: 09/25/2017

Work is complete on City of Madison Parks' first fully accessible playground!
The playground features:

  • fully ramp-connected main play structure
  • three-bay swing with two accessible seats / two belt seats and two tot seats
  • stand-alone play pieces with a focus on side-by-side play as well as ease of access for visitors of many physical abilities
  • a concrete ribbon surrounding the rubber surface which serves as a highly-contrasting route of travel outside of the active play zones of the equipment
  • several pieces, including the Cozy Cocoon and benches and lower-level seat areas of the main structure, which are intended as places of quiet repose away from the more active equipment areas
  • color to indicate climbing areas (purple), seats and steps (orange), safety railings and restraints (lime green) vs. platforms and posts (dark brown)
  • accessible routes of travel to the park's restroom facilities located within the shelter and to the adjacent parking lot

BACKGROUND:
A meeting was held with the neighborhood on November 21st at the Bayview International Center for Education and the Arts to review equipment proposals from six vendors previously vetted by Parks staff working with the city's accessibility coordinator and families and caregivers within the disabled community.  Attendees voted for the preferred main play structure vendor and discussed the project schedule and goals.

Parks staff continued to work with the selected manufacturer to refine the proposal to fully meet its design parameters for the project, as well as to address some of the suggestions from meeting attendees.

A summary of this meeting, including the materials presented, can be found below.
