Become an AASPIRE Intern with the City Today

The City of Madison is dedicated to creating a community where all are able to achieve economic success and social mobility. To increase economic success of our student population while demystifying City government work, the Department of Civil Rights annually sponsors Affirmative Action Student Professionals In Residence (AASPIRE) internships.

The AASPIRE internship program was created in 2003 with the mission to introduce students who have been historically underrepresented to City government and make them aware of future employment opportunities with the City. After completing their internship, interns are eligible for positions limited to City employees for up to 6 months. Currently the City of Madison employs seven former AASPIRE interns:

Current & Recently Graduated Students: 2022 AASPIRE Internships will be posted February 28

AASPIRE is a paid internship is specifically available to current college students from an accredited university or a two year technical college program. Students who have graduated within the past two years are also eligible to apply.

Interns work on a limited-term, management-level project that broadens their skills. Through this, interns will also have a chance to explore and establish career goals, acquire practical interviewing experience, develop essential skills, broaden their professional network, learn about future employment opportunities with the City, and gain experience in public service. City managers will provide guidance, mentorship, and help in more deeply understanding what it means to provide public service.  

This paid summer internship lasts for 8-10 weeks. Applications are available February 28 through March 20.  This summer we will be offering 16* internship positions with the following City agencies:

• Common Council
• Community Development
• Engineering
• Fire
• Golf
• Greater Madison MPO
• Human Resources
• Information Technology
• Madison Public Library
• Parks
• Planning
• Traffic Engineering
