Multiple D19 Projects at Plan Commission and Other Highlights for the Week of August 23

Multiple District 19 Projects at Monday's Plan Commission Meeting

Adopting the Odana Area Plan as a supplement to the Comprehensive Plan

Element Collective at University Research Park (421 Charmany Drive)

Consideration of a conditional use in the Traditional Shopping Street (TSS) District for a mixed-use building with greater than 48 dwelling units; consideration of a conditional use in the TSS District for a building exceeding three (3) stories and 40 feet in height; consideration of a conditional use in the TSS District for an outdoor eating area for a food and beverage establishment; consideration of a conditional use in the TSS District for outdoor recreation; consideration of a conditional use in the TSS District for a private parking facility, all to allow construction of a six-story mixed-use building with 179 dwelling units and 4,400 square feet of retail space. 

Element Labs at University Research Park (425 Charmany Drive)

Consideration of a conditional use in the Traditional Employment (TE) District for a building exceeding 68 feet in height and consideration of a conditional use in the TE District for general retail and/or food and beverage uses, to allow construction of a five-story laboratory building with a first floor retail/ restaurant tenant space.

5533/5535 University Avenue (formerly Brennan's Market)

Consideration of a demolition permit to demolish a grocery store; consideration of a conditional use to construct a mixed-use building with over 24 dwelling units in the Neighborhood Mixed-Use (NMX) District; consideration of a conditional use for a building in the NMX District exceeding three stories and 40 feet in height; consideration of a conditional use for a building in the NMX District modifying the allowed rear yard height transition to a residential district, all to construct a mixed-use building with 2,735 square feet of commercial space and 66 apartments.

515-527 S Gammon Road; Consideration of a conditional use in the Commercial Center (CC) District for a vehicle access sales and service window for a restaurant tenant in a multi-tenant commercial building.

910 Pebble Beach Road; Consideration of a conditional use in the Suburban Residential-Consistent 1 (SR-C1) District to construct an accessory building exceeding 1,000 square feet.

1123 Merrill Springs Road; Consideration of a conditional use in the Suburban Residential-Consistent 1 (SR-C1) District to construct an accessory building exceeding 800 square feet.

5521 Odana Road; Consideration of a conditional use in the Commercial Corridor-Transitional (CC-T) District for limited production and processing; consideration of a conditional use in the CC-T District for a wholesale bakery; consideration of a conditional use in the CC-T District for a vehicle access sales and service window; and consideration of a conditional use in the CC-T District for an outdoor eating, to allow a former bank in a multi-tenant commercial center to be converted into a wholesale bakery and coffee shop with drive-thru window and outdoor eating area.

Also, the Plan Commission will be discussing proposed zoning text amendments related to tiny houses, portable shelter missions, and mission camps at its meeting on Monday starting at 5:30pm.

Proposed Streatery Outdoor Live Music Restriction

The Madison Arts Commission will be discussing a resolution restricting live outdoor music with amplified sound at Streatery venues near residential dwellings at its meeting on Monday.

  • Don't miss the last LIFT Leopold event on August 24, 5:30pm-7:30pm at Aldo Leopold Park, 2906 Traceway Drive.  Enjoy free dinner at 6pm, live music from the Angela Puerta Band, YMCA flag football skills and drills, GHC-SCW yoga class, MSCR adaptive dance and nature kits for kids, the Madison Reading Project bus, and a free vaccination clinic and vaccine education.

  • Are you excited to get back to State Street for fun times and festivals? One way you can do that is by attending the MadLit festivals, which happen every other Friday night, 8pm-11pm, from July through October.  The next MadLit festival is August 27, with Spoken Word + Comedy Showcase Featuring DJ M.   • The City of Madison would like to invite anyone impacted by the upcoming Town of Madison Attachment process to a virtual public information meeting on Wednesday, September 15, at 6pm.  More information can be found here.

  • Redistricting, the process of redrawing Madison's wards and alder districts based on population changes that have occurred over the last decade, has begun. Redistricting determines which communities and neighborhoods are assembled into alder districts and other voting districts. There are many opportunities for the community to participate in the process. You can create maps illustrating your community of interest by using Representable, an online tool to share information about the interests and needs of your community.  Feedback can guide both the Dane County and City of Madison redistricting efforts. More information on the redistricting process, including updated population numbers for each current district, is available here. Draft new Alder maps are expected to be released this week and final Madison District/Wards maps are expected to be approved in October!

  • Dane County Alliance Against Commercial Tobacco sounds the alarm on new tobacco product: nicotine pouches.  Read more here.

  • On Monday, August 2, Metro Transit and the City of Madison Transportation Policy and Planning Board (TPPB) held a public hearing to discuss expected changes in fare collection technology and future policy changes that will be coming in the next few years.  The TPPB met again on Monday, August 16. It was decided that Metro will not move forward on any cashless policy proposals at this time.   • Metro's Transit Network Redesign Survey #2 is live.  Your input is essential! Please take this quick, 10-minute survey to help us better understand the 'type' of transit network to implement.
