Fire Extinguisher Training Available

July 8, 2009

The Madison Fire Department Community Education Office now offers fire extinguisher training for businesses and community groups. The training program includes information on the classes of fire, types of fire extinguishers, safe use of an extinguisher, and hands-on practice.

Fire extinguishers are designed for use during the early stage of a small fire. Because they are limited by their size and extinguishing capability, it is important for users to know how to use an extinguisher effectively. Using a fire extinguisher can also be dangerous; however education and training can reduce the risk of injury.

The hands-on practice is conducted outside using the BullEx Fire Extinguisher Training Simulator. The BullEx system provides students with a safe means to learn and practice effective fire extinguisher operation. The simulator uses propane gas and electronic sensors to test the student's technique and skill at operating a fire extinguisher. The instructor can select the type and difficulty level of the fire that the student must extinguish.

The BullEx Fire Extinguisher Training Simulator was purchased with grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program and the Madison South Rotary.

For more information on the fire extinguisher training program and to schedule a training session, please contact the Community Education Office at 266-4709. Training sessions are scheduled during the months of May through September.
