Dialogue on Public Art in Madison on Wednesday, July 29
July 27, 2009
Sponsored by District 6 Alder Marsha Rummel & Marquette Neighborhood Association
District 6 Alder Marsha Rummel will be one of the participants in the Marquette Neighborhood Associations' Dialogue on Public Art in Madison.
On Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center, 953 Jenifer Street, the Marquette Neighborhood Association Board will be hosting a Dialogue on Public Art in Madison and discussing how the neighborhood can be involved. Topics to be covered are siting public art in the neighborhood and public art opportunities for Central Park. Neighborhood residents and public art enthusiasts are encouraged to attend.
Ald. Marsha Rummel states, "I am excited to launch my proposal of creating an Art Walk along the Capitol City Bike Trail from Blair Street to the future Garver Arts incubator at Olbrich Park. Many years ago I was inspired by the installation of the Dreamkeepers, Dr. Evermor's giant metal birds at the Warren buildings on Paterson Street at the railroad tracks. I'd love to see more of his art in Central Park and enhance the near east sides' reputation as an arts destination. As I talked to people, the idea evolved to include more opportunities for sculpture along the bike path."
City Parks Division Landscape Architect, Bill Bauer, has created a map of potential locations for public art that will be presented (link to map http://www.cityofmadison.com/Council/district06/Documents/DrEvermor_ARTC... - Note: Use magnifier).
"One of the topics at the Marquette Neighborhood Association meeting on public art will be the "Intersection Repair", a concept which allows a community to transform an intersection by painting a mural on the street. It helps slow traffic and builds relationships among neighbors. I am working with Traffic Engineering and the City Attorney to draft an ordinance to allow this in Madison," said Ald. Marsha Rummel.
