Plastic Bag Recycling Program Kicks Off

December 19, 2009

The Streets Division announced the start up of the plastic bag recycling program. The drop off program will start with nine sites with at least four more sites to be added in the coming weeks. With the start of the drop off program, most clean plastic bags are banned from disposal in Madison refuse carts and dumpsters.

"We are very pleased to get this program started," said Madison recycling coordinator George Dreckmann. "We hope that Madison residents will take advantage of the new program and recycle as many of their plastic bags as possible."

The new drop off program was a result of the nationwide movement to ban or recycle plastic grocery bags. In addition to plastic grocery bags the new program will take the following plastic bags;

Most Plastic Bags From Retailers
Dry Cleaning Bag
Softener Salt Bags
Newspaper Delivery Bags
Ice Cube Bags
Plastic Film from Beverage Cases
Plastic Air Pillow Packaging.

Material that will not be taken includes

Black or Dark Colored Bags
Drawstring Bags
Food Wrap
Meat Wrap
Prepackaged Produce Bags
Bags From Inside Cereal and Cracker Boxes
Bubble Wrap

All bags must be empty, dry and clean.
