Quick Stop by Firefighters Keeps Garage Fire From Becoming House Fire

April 20, 2010

City of Madison firefighters responded to a fire at 5 Heugel Court this morning after the occupants called 911 to report a garage fire.

The residents were inside the house when they say they smelled something burning. One of the occupants opened the door to the garage where he was met with thick black smoke.

Firefighters were dispatched at 11:40 a.m. They arrived to find black smoke coming from the eaves of the garage. The fire was knocked down within five minutes of their arrival.

All occupants had exited the house without injury prior to the arrival of firefighters. One person was checked for smoke inhalation at the scene, but was not transported.

Investigators now believe damages to the garage and its contents will reach $75,000. However, fire was prevented from entering the living area of the home, which suffered only light smoke damage.

The cause is still under investigation.
