Winter Activities for January 19

January 19, 2012

January 19, 2012 - A few more rinks are open tonight! Enjoy!

Ice Skating Rinks - A few more ice rinks are open for skating today. The rinks that are open tonight are: Vilas Park (General/hockey (no boards)/parts of lagoon), Elver Park general rink, Olbrich general rink, Westmorland general/hockey, Goodman Park, Garner general rink, Hillington Green, and Wexford Park.

Staff is continuing to work on the ice rink maintenance, however, tomorrow's prediction of 3-8" of snow will change the status of the rinks. Please note that staff is working diligently on Tenney Park lagoon, but have found several areas of thin ice along the shoreline and in the middle of the lagoon. Please stay off Tenney Park Lagoon.

Please check back tomorrow for further updates.

Sledding Hills -Staff made snow at Elver Park. After your sledding hill run - stop in, warm up and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa at the concession area in the warming shelter. Remember, sledding is at your own risk, exit the bottom of the hill and walk up the sides of the hill.

Ski Trails - Yesterday trails at Odana Golf Course and the east trails at Elver Park were rolled and packed. The conditions are more suited to skate skiing. Several more inches of snow is needed in order to groom the trails with tracks. Due to drifting and blowing snow, some parts of the trails may have open grass. The lights will be on at Elver Park.

Snowshoeing - Snowshoers must stay on the trails. Please note snowshoes are not allowed on cross country ski trails at anytime. Madison Parks does not rent snowshoes.

Please keep in mind that there needs to be sufficient snow to create a base for snowshoeing. The woods generally need more snow to fall because the trees protect the trails. For a list of parks to snowshoe in: http://www.cityofmadison.com/parks/snowshoeing/
