New Appliance Fees Begin Monday March 6th

The City of Madison is expanding the list of items subject to collection fees. Starting Monday March 6th Madison residents will have to pay a $15 fee to dispose of old televisions, computer monitors, computer CPU’s, lawn mowers, snow throwers, garden tillers and gas grills. The Streets Division was directed to increase collection fee revenues by $100,000 as part of the 2006 Operating Budget. Residents who have to dispose of these items will have to purchase a fee sticker. The fee stickers are available on line at www.madisonpays.com, at any Madison Public Library, the City Treasurer’s office in Room 107 of the City County Building, and from the Streets Division offices at 1501 W. Badger Rd and 4602 Sycamore Av. The sales outlets will accept cash or checks only. Credit cards can be used for online purchases. “The fifteen dollar fee applies to items collected at the curb and for those brought to the Streets Division’s drop off sites,” Madison recycling coordinator George Dreckmann said. “Televisions and computer components collected through this program are not going to be recycled,” Dreckmann said. “Residents who want to recycle electronics and computers and take their material to the Madison Recycling Center. The fee there is just $.35 per pound so it will cost you less to bring the material in for recycling than to have us collect it at the curb for landfilling.” The Madison Recycling Center is located at 2200 Fish Hatchery Rd. You can get information on their programs by calling 251-2115. The City of will be conducting an electronics recycling collection on Saturday April 22nd. That event will be held at the City Transfer Station at 121 E. Olin Av. There is a $5 charge to recycle monitors and a $25 for televisions. The Streets Division is sending out a Recyclopedia Update to Madison residents later this month. Updated information on the program and the City’s computer round up is available on the Internet at www.cityofmadison.com/streets and from a recorded information line 266-4683.
