Garlic Mustard
Garlic
mustard is an invasive, exotic plant introduced from Europe presumably by
early settlers for its supposed medicinal properties and for use in cooking.
Garlic Mustard is crowding out, and even killing many of our native
plant species, threatening the rich bio-diversity in our woodlands.
Many
neighborhood and grassroots organizations have organized work days to pull
garlic mustard in their area parks. One neighborhood has even created a
special event to not only pull the weed, but to cook with it. The Weed
Feed is at Glenwood Children's Park on Sunday, May 17 from
10a.m.-2p.m. Pull some garlic mustard and bring a weed dish to pass.
The Madison Area Weed Warriors is a grassroots volunteer conservation group
started in 2000. The goal of the
Madison Area Weed Warriors is to recruit volunteers to pull garlic mustard in
Madison
conservation parks and to teach neighborhoods and interested individuals
how to organize their friends and neighbors to adopt their neighborhood park.
This as an excellent opportunity to have fun building strong
communities, get to know your neighbors, learn about the plants in your parks,
and to make our parks healthy.
