SPECIAL EVENTS: Weddings in Madison Parks : Gates of Heaven

Gates of Heaven
Located in:  James Madison Park, 302 E. Gorham Street
For questions call, 266-4711

The Gates of Heaven, built in 1863, is the fourth oldest surviving synagogue building in the nation.  In 1970, the building was moved to James Madison Park.  Owned by the City of Madison Parks Division, the Gates of Heaven contributes to the beauty and diversity of downtown Madison and is a popular site for weddings and gatherings.

2010 Reservations:
Reservations for the Gates of Heaven will begin on November 10.

New for 2010
A number lottery system will be instated to ensure fairness for the patrons wishing to reserve the more popular shelters and summer weekend dates.  Numbers will be drawn beginning at 7:30a.m., and in-person reservations will begin at 8:00a.m.   Phone-in reservations will begin at 9:00a.m.   Because of the lottery system, it will not be in anyone's best interest to arrive at the Madison Parks office before 7:00a.m.
Please keep in mind that some parks host large, regional events and are scheduled in advance.  Some research on dates of annual events and having a couple of dates in mind will help your event and the reservation process go more smoothly.

2010 Rates:

  • Weekend rates: 2 hour blocks - $90.00

  • Weekday rates: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. - $70.00
                            4 p.m. - 10 p.m. - $80.00

The package includes 2 hours of rehearsal time the day before the wedding, 4 hours use of the facility on the day of the wedding and a park attendant for the 4 hours on the day of the wedding.

A deposit is required for the key to the building. (Refundable) - $300.00

The seating capacity of the Gates of Heaven is 98 people.  There are folding chairs located in the back of the room and in the basement.   Standard room layout (pdf)

Decorations :
To maintain the beauty of this historic building, no nails, staples or other fasteners that will harm the wall or floors may be used in this or any park shelter.  The Madison Parks Division recommends using freestanding decorations.
