Smash and Grab Thefts from Cars

May 15, 2014 12:21 PM

The Madison Police Department needs your help in stopping smash and grab thefts from vehicles.  There has been an increase in smash and grab thefts in the downtown area.  Most of these thefts are occuring in the early morning hours. There has also been an increase in thefts from unlocked vehicles throughout the city.

With the smash and grab thefts, the suspect looks into the vehicle and if there are backpacks, laptops or other valuables visible, he/she breaks the window with a rock, reaches in and takes the item.  With the unlocked vehicle thefts, the suspect simply checks car doors and makes entry when able.  These cases are occurring at any time of the day or night.

Remember to keep all valuables out of sight or take them with you when you lock your vehicle.  If you have any information about these cases or can identify a suspect, please contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers on the web at TipSubmit.com or call 266-6014.

Individuals contacting Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
