Community Policing Blotter

Shout-Out to Officer Kim Alan

August 12, 2014 2:58 PM

Below is a recognition that Officer Kim Alan received for her on-going work as a Neighborhood Police Officer in our South District.

"Since taking over the Triangle Neighborhood in August 2013, Kim (Officer Kim Alan) has worked hard to build relationships with the residents in her neighborhood.  She has taken a particular interest in the Hmong community, recognizing an opportunity to break down barriers that exist given cultural and langauage differences.

In meeting with the Hmong people, Kim learned many of them rely on the Brittingham Community Garden to grow vegetables in order to provide for their families.  This is due to the high unemployment rate and the low income status of most Hmong families living in the Triangle Neighborhood.  Capitalizing on this, Kim saw an opportunity to support the Hmong families by creating a farmers market at Brittingham Park where the Hmong could sell their produce for much needed income.

There were several logistical hurdles that had to be overcome to make this a reality including generating support of community leaders and other stakeholders.  Also, several permits had to be obtained, schedules confirmed, and funding secured.  This required numerous meetings over several months.

Occuring Tuesdays, the market started in June and will run through September.  One of the highlights of the market is having a visiting chef who puts on a cooking demonstration using the produce available at the market.  Our very own Chief is scheduled to provide his culinary expertise in the coming weeks.

Through this hugely successful market, Kim has demonstrated her ability to take a vision and make it a reality.  This has required an endless amount of dedication, hard work, persistence, and the ability to work closely with others.  This market exemplifies what community policing is all about and Kim should be proud of her accomplishment!"

Awesome job Officer Alan and keep up the great work!
