It is often overlooked but vitally important in property crimes investigations to have the serial number or some other distinct marking recorded by the victim. A quick cell phone photo of the serial number or a picture of the receipt or both are hugely important when investigators are recovering stolen items. Recording the serial number provides investigators the ability to tie a piece of property to an individual and helps detectives substantiate a charge. Storing the data on a piece of paper or on your PC can pay big dividends when it comes time to recovering your stolen property. Marking your property with paint or engraving your initials on your property will also help but the combination of a photograph and specific mark can often times substitute for the lack of a recorded serial number.
