Domestic Violence can include any behavior that is intended to
control another person through the use of fear, humiliation, or physical or
verbal assaults. Domestic Violence can include Physical Violence, Emotional Abuse, Sexual
Abuse, Stalking Behaviors, or other factors such as Economic and Social control as
well. Physical Violence can include acts such as slapping, hitting, kicking,
punching, choking, restraining someone against their will, or other acts intended to
injure or cause pain.
Emotional Violence includes doing or saying things to shame, belittle, embarrass,
insult, ridicule or mentally harm someone. This may include calling someone names,
telling them they can't do anything right, or saying things to make someone believe they
are unwanted or undeserving. Emotional abuse also includes withholding affection,
attention, or forbidding them to socialize with family or friends or to hold a
job. Threats to injure the person, their children, pets or friends may also be
considered emotional abuse. Manipulation, coercion, and ridicule also fall under emotional
abuse. The financial and economic control of another person can be abusive as well.
Sexual Abuse includes forcing someone to have sex when they do not want to, regardless
of marital status. It also includes forcing someone to engage in sexual acts they do
not like or find unpleasant, frightening, or violent. Forcing someone to have sex
with others or to watch others have sex, criticism of sexual performance are also sexually
abusive acts.
Stalking Behaviors are common both before and after a victim has left an abusive
relationship. Stalking involves any pattern of behavior that serves no legitimate
purpose, and is intended to scare, harass, or annoy the victim. |
