In 2005, the Madison Police Department’s K9 unit expanded to 4 dog teams. Historically, MPD has only had a handful of police service dogs, usually assigned to the Dane County Narcotics and Gang Task Force. Funding was never available to implement a dedicated, patrol K9 unit. However, in 2004 a nonprofit organization - Capital K9’s - was formed by a group of private citizens for the express purpose of raising funds to support the implementation of an MPD patrol K9 unit. Thanks to the efforts of Capital K9’s, the department was able to deploy the first dedicated patrol K9 teams (Officer Donnell/Johnny and Officer O’Shea/Gregor) in the history of the Madison Police Department.

In early 2006, Arno retired from active duty after more than six years of service to the community. Arno passed away during the summer of 2006, succumbing to prostate cancer. Sergeant Boyd continues to supervise the K9 unit, and also serves as the K9 unit trainer. Officer Jeff Felt and his K9 partner, Gildon, were added to the unit in early 2006.

Officer Henry Wilson and his K9 partner, Ivan, joined the unit in early 2007.
