A Madison Police sergeant was monitoring a large crowd on the sidewalk in the 600 block of University Ave. early Sunday morning when several fights broke out. The sergeant, hoping to keep violence from escalating, and concerned weapons could become involved, used his OC (Oleoresin Capsicum or pepper) spray on active fighters who were involved in three separate scrums. The OC had the desired effect: the fighters called it quits and fled, while the crowd began to disperse.Released 07/23/2012 at 3:47 PM by PIO Joel DeSpain
