Details

There was a shell in the chamber, but the handgun had jammed. The MPD recovered the weapon in snow after it was pointed at a Madison teen late Saturday morning. The 17-year old victim said he was walking in the 300 block of Clyde Gallagher Ave. when a car pulled up and the front seat passenger jumped out. The passenger pointed a handgun at the victim and made a statement that made the victim believe he was about to be shot. The victim said he pulled up his pants while the suspect swung the pistol, attempting to hit him. The victim ducked, put the suspect in a bear hug, and threw him to the ground. The younger teen then grabbed the gun with one hand while punching the suspect with the other. The two exchanged blows. The driver got out of the car, and got into a fistfight with one of the victim's relatives – a 16-year old Madison male. At some point the driver also began punching the victim. At some point, the driver fled, and a friend of the victim arrived and joined in the struggle to control the gunman. The victim and his friend were able to disarm the suspect and hold him until police arrived. The first officer to pull up reported a chaotic scene with many people yelling. He drew his service weapon and ordered the teens to stop struggling and get on the ground. It was at this time, the officer was made aware that the suspect had a gun. The victim told police motivation for the violence was likely revenge for an earlier fight, one in which he fought with a friend of the suspect.
