Incident Report for Case #2013-114466

Incident Type

Intoxicated/Impaired Driver

Incident Date

04/24/2013 - 1:45 AM

700 block E. Washington Ave.

Michael F. King, age 54, Madison
Mr. King was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated - 2nd offense, Reckless Driving, Deviating from Lane, Flee/Elude Officer, Violate Red Traffic Signal, and Failure to Stop for Stop Sign.

The MPD terminated a pursuit for safety reasons early this morning. However, officers were able to follow a residue trail, left by blown tires, to the suspect's Sheldon St. home. He ended up still getting arrested, but on many more tentative charges than had he stopped several miles back.

The intoxicated man first caught an officer's attention as he drove at approximately 80 mph along E. Washington Ave., heading toward the State Capitol. Not only was he speeding, but he was swerving in and out of a traffic lane. The officer, running red lights and siren, attempted to pull the driver over, but he would not stop. Another officer threw down spike strips near at the intersection of W. Washington Ave. and Regent St. At least two tires drove over the spikes. Still, the driver did not stop, although some wheels were now smoking and leaving a trail of burned residue.

After slowing down to around 25 mph for part of the pursuit, he now began to accelerate to estimated speeds of between 65 and 70 mph on Monroe St. A MPD sergeant ordered the pursuit terminated, but the suspect did not escape for long, as he left behind a trail of clues.
