An angry man jumped the counter of a Cottage Grove Rd. computer store Tuesday afternoon and grabbed a 26-year old employee by the neck. The victim responded by punching the suspect. The blow caused the 60-year old to stumble backwards. As he did, the victim ran out of the store and called 911. A second employee, a 27-year old man, said the suspect began following him around the store. He said the entire time the man was swearing and yelling. The employee recognized the voice as someone who had just called the store. He said the man on the phone was belligerent and cussing, and the employee told the caller who was unable to assist him because of the verbal abuse. The employee hung up. The man in the store said something about how "you don't hang up on me!" The second employee said the suspect eventually left the store, and he - the employee - seized the opportunity to lock the door. All of this was captured on video surveillance, and images show the suspect trying to reenter the store. When this failed, he grabbed a parking lot sign with a concrete base. He swung the heavy end at the store's window, causing it to break. The suspect drove away, but not before a witness got his license plate number. Officers showed up at the man's home and took him into custody.
