Update

A suspect, believed to be involved in the series of recent phone thefts, is in custody. Mr. Malcolm M. Whiteside, age 18, Madison, was arrested yesterday morning around 11:25 a.m. Police had received information a person matching the thief's description was onboard a Madison Metro bus. A suspect was detained after the bus was stopped by a MPD captain near the intersection of S. Mills St. and Fahrenbrook Ct. He was later arrested on one count of Theft from Person. Additional tentative charges are likely.

Details

The MPD is seeking your help in identifying a young thief who detectives believe has stolen iPhones out of the hands of 3 Madison Metro bus passengers on 3 separate dates in April.

He typically targets women seated near rear doors and waits for the bus to stop. When a rear door opens, he makes his move. The cases have all happened on the near west side.

A 30-year old Madison woman had her iPhone taken near the intersection of Regent St. and N. Midvale Blvd. around 11:30 a.m. on April 12.

A 23-year old Madison woman had her iPhone taken in the 2000 block of University Ave. around 1:30 p.m. on April 19.

A 19-year old woman had her iPhone stolen in the 400 block of Science Dr. around 1:10 p.m. on April 26.
