Incident Report for Case #2013-114976

Incident Type

Fraud

Incident Date

04/22/2013 - 8:00 AM

Address

6300 block Maywick Dr.

Victim(s)

Male, age 85, Madison

Details

A Madison grandfather was duped out of over $4,000 last month after falling for a phone scam. The 85-year old received calls from someone claiming to be his grandson, and from a man who said he was the grandson's attorney.

The ruse is a familiar one: the grandson had been in a car crash, didn't want to tell his parents and needed money fast. The victim first sent a MoneyGram for $2,180. That was to cover repairs to the vehicle the grandson hit. The victim was next told to send $1,960 for hospital bills incurred by the driver of the other car. He was called on a third consecutive day and told $2,000 in bail money was now needed.

The victim nearly sent additional funds, but bank officials stepped in and advised him to investigate. He did, and found this was all poppycock.

He provided the MPD with the phone number from which the fraud was being perpetrated: (514)365-3558. A quick internet search shows someone using the same number has tried to scam others
