Incident Report for Case #2013-203128

Incident Type

Incident Date

07/06/2013 - 1:31 PM

2900 Settlement Drive

Continuing Investigation

Since March 2013, a number of complaints have been documented by MG&E, reference individuals alleging to be representatives of that organization, and calling unsuspecting customers about overdue electric and gas bills.  The individual advises the customer that immediate payment is required to avoid service interruption, and directs the customer to secure a Money Gram Card or Green Dot Card (Prepaid cards easily purchased at convenience stores) to satisfy the outstanding bill.  In some instances, the caller has suggested that specific equipment, within a person's home or business, needs an upgrade or replacement.  Some people have actually had their debit card information requested via phone to pay fees.

The Madison Police Department has been in contact with MG&E, and continues to remind the public that calls requesting payment in the manner described above is fraudulent.  Local utilities can be contacted during business hours to inquire about the status of your account, and calls on the weekend, from individuals representing themselves as a utility company, should be questioned.  The Madison Police Department asks that anyone who feels that they have been contacted in this manner should report those instances immediately, as the information is vitally important to keeping other people from being victimized in the future.
