DetailsThe victim - a Swedish man in Madison for a conference - did not really know the suspect, but he did meet her on the street, and he did have a couple of drinks with her Saturday night at a downtown bar. He went to bed, and thought the casual conversation with a Madison local was now in his past. He may have been done with her, but she was not finished with him.
Before sunrise Sunday morning, she had convinced staff at an Isthmus hotel she was no stranger to the victim; she was actually his wife, and locked out of "their" room. In part, she pulled off this caper by pretending to talk with the victim from a lobby phone. The one-sided conversation took place after an employee called to the victim's room attempting to verify the status of his spouse. It turns out he slept through everything, including the part where the woman was let into his room. She ended up taking his electronics, his passport, wallet and duffel bag. Thanks to ample surveillance video - from the bar and hotel - the MPD has identified a suspect. She has not yet been located.
