DetailsMadison Police responded to a disturbance involving a male, identified as Thomas Sturtevant, who started knocking bottles of alcohol off of the bar after losing patience with staff when he tried closing his tab. The bartender tried to get Sturtevant to calm down, but Sturtevant extended a challenge to take matters outside; as he was told leave the establishment based on his behavior. The 36-year-old bartender and bouncers attempted to walk Sturtevant out, but not before Sturtevant's girlfriend, identified as Sarah Gifford, approached the bartender and physically attacked him.
The bartender tried to thwart off Gifford as she pushed, slapped, and even scratched him, and Sturtevant then seized his opportunity to attack also. Bouncers stepped in, and forcibly removed both unruly patrons, but a table was overturned/glasses were broken inside the establishment, and Gifford expressed her discontent by spitting at staff. Both were warned this had progressed too far, and police were on their way!
Police responded, and Sturtevant ran from officers, after he was found hiding behind vehicles in a nearby parking ramp. A foot pursuit of Sturtevant ended near a porta potty; a place he found to be a good hiding spot, near Law Park. Another struggle ensued, but he was quickly taken into custody. Witnesses to the altercation followed Gifford, as she ran barefoot into traffic near Blair Street. Officers eventually contacted her, and all parties were conveyed to the Dane County Jail.
