DetailsMadison Police officers were able to successfully negotiate a peaceful end with an armed and suicidal man Monday afternoon. The 40-year old was wielding a knife, and was trying to order his wife to drive them out of town. She had earlier contacted police out of concern for his welfare, and officers were actively trying to find the man. Initially, they were not aware he had gotten into a car with his wife. It was spotted on North Oak St., and an officer could see the man was making stabbing motions toward his stomach. When his wife pulled over, she quickly got out and said he was trying to hurt himself. The man was initially slow to follow officers' commands, but they convinced him they were there to help him. He dropped the knife and got out of the car. He had a cut wrist, but no other significant injuries. Officers provided medical assistance until Madison Fire paramedics arrived, and provided the wife with contact information regarding resources that are available to them as they work through stressful times. An officer also let her know that she would be giving the wife's contact information to someone in the Dane County District Attorney's Victim Witness Unit. The wife indicated she was appreciative of the service.
