Incident Report for Case #2013-271920

Incident Type

Incident Date

08/31/2013 - 6:46 AM

116 W. Washington Ave. (Grace Episcopal Church)

Richard S. Thomas, age 25, Madison
Suspect was arrested for Trespass and Disorderly Conduct.

The callers dialing 911 were concerned the man could fall and be seriously injured. The 25-year old suspect had been spotted atop Grace Episcopal Church, 116 W. Washington Ave. It was early Saturday morning, and the Capitol Square was already starting to bustle with early Dane County Farmers' Market traffic, and with vendors preparing for the Taste of Madison. So, what was happening near Grace's steeple was catching the attention of many, particularly after the Madison Fire Department ladder truck showed up to assist investigating officers. Eventually firefighters were able to extend an aerial ladder to the roof and safely attach the trespasser to it. Once he was back on the ground, he was cited for trespass, and for disorderly conduct. It was not immediately clear what exactly motivated his urban ascent, although an officer in charge noted he scaled the roof's summit because he could, because it's there.
