Details

He was talking on his cell phone with a friend and speaking in his native African language. The 22-year old Madison man was seated inside a State St. bus stop, near the intersection with Fairchild St. He said it was about 11:20 p.m. last night, and he says he was minding his own business. While still on the phone, two strangers approached and ordered him to "stop talking that way." The victim said one punched him in the face. Afraid, he ran and called police. A sergeant, out on routine foot patrol, spotted the described suspects and watched as they ducked down near a residence in the 400 block of W. Mifflin St. It is marked with no trespassing signs. One man acknowledged having a confrontation with the victim, but claimed the victim started it by saying derogatory things about "white people." Later as the men were being taken to jail, the same suspect told his friend: "We did work tonight. We did white boy work tonight." The victim was shaken up, but not injured in the attack, which he says was unprovoked.
