A 22-year old downtown resident was nearly hit by an out-of-control van Saturday night. It missed her by several feet before slamming into a utility pole in the 100 block of W. Gorham St. The witness said the collision caused sparks to come flying from the utility pole, some of which struck her. She was not injured. The woman said the driver and several passengers fled on foot. Police arrived to find the van heavily damaged with airbags deployed. They were able to make contact with the driver several hours later, around 3:30 a.m. He told officers he "way too messed up from drinking" and that is why he took off. Full and empty beer cans were found inside the smashed van.
