Incident Date10/01/2013 - 2:12 PM
Victim(s)Female, age 28, Madison
DetailsA Madison woman fell for a phone scam and made a credit card payment for over $500, likely to overseas criminals. The 28-year old had gotten a call earlier this month from "case manager Morrison of Dane County." He had her date of birth, social security number, and other personal information. "Morrison" told her she owed $2,754 for bank fraud and theft stemming from crimes committed around Christmas 2008. His message indicated he was calling to "secure a court summons" for the victim. She was provided a phone number to call: 855-278-7749. The woman was "freaking out" because everything seemed so official. She called the number and talked with a man who said he was with BMG Payday. He told her is she paid a little over $500 immediately, the matter would be settled. As soon as she made the payment, she began to process what had just happened, and realized she had been victimized.
