DetailsTwo shoppers, including an off-duty Beloit Police officer, take down a suspect who was passing counterfeit $100 bills at West Towne Mall.
In the process, the criminal punched one in the head and the injured man ended up needing stitches.
The crimes took place Saturday afternoon and involved at least three $100 bills being passed at different stores: The Gap, Kirlin's Hallmark, and Icing. In all cases a suspect purchased low cost items and received more than $90 in change from each transaction. The last occurred at Icing where earrings were bought by the suspect. The clerk thought it strange a grown man would be buying jewelry that was really "girly" looking. She inspected the $100 bill more closely and determined it was really a doctored $5 bill.
She chased the suspect through the mall and caught up with him as he tried to exit at Dick's Sporting Goods. She grabbed the man, but he wriggled free. A shopper, a 38-year old Rio man, saw the confrontation and stepped in to stop the suspect. The Milwaukee man responded by punching the Good Samaritan in the head. The Good Samaritan decided it was time to take the suspect to the ground. The two were wrestling on the floor when the off-duty officer intervened. He helped the Rio man subdue the suspect until on-duty Madison officers arrived shortly thereafter.
