Incident Date11/12/2013 - 2:00 PM
Address1701 Thierer Rd. (Maharaja Grocery)
DetailsThe owner of an east side grocery recently fell for a scam often directed at minority owned businesses. In this case, the target was Maharaja Grocery, 1701 Thierer Rd. A caller, claiming to be with MG&E said the store was delinquent in paying the utility bill, and that electricity would be shut off if more than $1,100 was not paid immediately. The owner assured the bill had been paid, but the caller said it had not been received. The con artist said if it was MG&E's error, the store would be given a credit on the next bill. With that, the owner went to Walgreens and loaded the payment onto MoneyPak cards. He then provided the caller - "Anthony" - with the cards' numbers. "Anthony" was calling from 414-979-6834.
