DetailsMadison Police Officers responded to the area of Fish Hatchery Road and High Street for a hit and run accident. Officers contacted two victims, involved in two separate crashes, and a utility pole that was damaged as a result of the accident. One victim, a 21-year-old female, stated she was driving northbound on Fish Hatchery Road, when she noticed a blue cargo van swerve over the center line, into oncoming traffic, and sideswiped her vehicle. This impact spun her vehicle around, and was so forceful it bent the axel of her car. The blue van continued to drive southbound, and struck an Infinity QX4, driven by a 35-year-old male. That collision left his vehicle resting against the utility pole, after having jumped a curb. The two accidents were not enough for the driver of the van to stop and check on the welfare of those victims, and the driver sped away from the scene. The Fitchburg Police Department located the van, later determined to be driven by Derek A Thompson, near Fish Hatchery Road and McKee Road.
Thompson tried to walk away from the vehicle, but officers matched a license plate that fell off of his van to the very, vehicle he was operating. Field sobriety tests were conducted, but the results were less than convincing that Thompson was anything close to being sober. Officers took Thompson into custody, and he was conveyed to the Dane County Sheriff's Office on charges listed., A preliminary breath test did reflect a blood alcohol contact of more than .20. No significant injures were noted.
